The one rule that matters
Main story quests are the leveling engine. Side quests in Wizard City and Krokotopia are worth doing once for the early boost, but past that, experience per hour lives in the main line. If a quest does not push the storyline arrow forward, it needs a reason to exist in your log.
School choice and your first deck
Every school reaches max level fine, so pick the play style, not a tier list. Hitters (Fire, Storm) level fastest solo because fights end faster. Whatever school you pick, keep your deck small. New players stuff 40 cards into a deck and spend every fight fishing. A lean deck of blade, trap, and your biggest hit ends fights in three rounds.
Gear checkpoints, free edition
You do not need Crown gear to level. Bazaar gear every 10 levels keeps you ahead of the curve, and the major farmed sets (the famous boss drops every wizard knows) are level-band upgrades worth a weekend. Check the Bazaar in Olde Town before you ever consider spending.
When to farm and when to push
Farming below max level is usually a trap. The gear you grind at level 40 is landfill at level 60. Push story until a wall stops you, then farm the minimum to break the wall. The one exception is a good wand upgrade, which is cheap and always worth it.
Membership timing
If you are going to subscribe, do it when you finish free Wizard City content, not on day one. You will know by then if the game has its hooks in you, and every membership day goes toward gated content instead of zones you could clear free.
